History
Red Rocks’ iconic rust-colored sandstone formations have long been an integral part of human culture and entertainment, providing the ideal environment for music to flourish and connect with their surrounding nature. Red Rocks is widely revered as one of the world’s premier outdoor venues, boasting natural acoustics that provide stunning backdrops – one reason it remains popular today.
John Brisben Walker began hosting concerts under Ship Rock and Creation Rock during the early 1900s on a temporary stage. Later, Denver purchased this area through purchase by Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration funds, and Denver architect Burnham Hoyt designed an elaborate theater to be constructed here by 1936.
In 1971, Jethro Tull had to postpone a concert due to a riot caused by fans without tickets trying to enter without tickets. As a result of this disturbance, there was a five-year ban on rock bands at this venue until 1976; instead it mostly hosted more gentle performances like John Denver and the Carpenters.
