Red Rocks Amphitheatre was formed over millions of years by geologic forces and efforts by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Exploration, ancient tribes, musicians and music fans have since left their mark upon it, leaving their legacy as they come.

With its steep pitch and breathtaking views, there’s no bad seat in the house at this venue – though windy nights may reduce sound quality in higher sections.

History

Geologic forces over millions of years shaped the immense rock formations that now comprise Red Rocks Amphitheatre; since 1876 musicians have brought audiences together at this legendary venue to make lasting memories in an environment that transcends just being special; it’s iconic.

Red Rocks begins its geological story with Pre-Cambrian basement rock that overlies 300 million-year-old Fountain Formation sedimentary rocks, but as a music venue it didn’t officially open its doors until early 1900s when Renaissance man John Brisben Walker constructed a stage between Ship and Creation Rock to host opera performances and take advantage of natural acoustics.

Construction on the amphitheater would begin five years later through Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA), then concerts began; with some showing more notable than others: hailstorm dropped marble-sized stones during a Steely Dan performance or fans hurling beer cans at Aretha Franklin prompting her to request that all rock-n-roll music be banned for seven years at that venue.

Seating

Burnham Hoyt took advantage of Red Rocks’ natural setting when designing seating arrangements that would maximize views and acoustics, such as elevating 70 rows of head-on seating to preserve their beauty and extraordinary soundscape. Red Rocks features 70 rows of elevated head-on seating that overlook its stunning sights.

Be sure to bring sunblock, a comfortable chair, and plenty of cold beverages (in factory sealed plastic bottles only). In such an elevated venue, dehydration is easy.

If you’re feeling luxurious, invest in a suite or VIP box for your show. Eight to 30 guests can fit comfortably inside these private enclaves with incredible amenities that will elevate the experience. Please be aware that upon entering the venue all bags must be opened for inspection, as glass and firearms are not permitted inside; be prepared to present identification if asked by security for search or inspection reasons.

Views

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, known for being the highest grossing outdoor venue worldwide, stands out as an unparalleled outdoor concert experience with breathtaking scenery and unmatched acoustics. Set amidst Colorado Rockies cliffs shaped over time by nature’s forces, Red Rocks stands as a breathtaking venue that never ceases to impress visitors from around the globe.

Ship Rock rises majestically from the stage like an impressive shipwreck; Creation Rock welcomes visitors via steep stone steps directly behind it. Both these giant monoliths have gained their own nicknames.

The rocks also serve to amplify sound, drawing attention to many of the visiting artists’ vocals and making their performances more prominent. While this can be beneficial for singer-songwriters, experimental acts that produce harsh, high-pitched noise may find that it becomes harder for their sounds to remain hidden. Furthermore, due to its height, this high elevation may alter sounds depending on wind conditions.

Sound

Red Rocks concerts are truly unforgettable due to its stunning natural acoustics; during a concert at Red Rocks, each note, riff and lyric resonates with clarity and resonance for maximum impact.

Geological features like Ship Rock and Creation Rock contribute to creating the amphitheater’s signature sound, while a sonic ordinance restricting bass levels and overall decibel limits help ensure performers remain within limits.

Red Rocks may boast remarkable acoustics, yet some local residents have complained of bass vibrations from Red Rocks shows. Trinity installed an acoustic treatment system to focus the sound field within the amphitheater while also providing Front of House engineers with access to PK Kontrol software in order to optimize sound quality for every show.

Parking

Red Rocks can be an unexpectedly long walk to reach, so arriving early and parking in the Upper North Lot is recommended for optimal experience.

Lots open two hours prior to show time, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and tailgate with drinks in hand. Bear in mind that open flames are prohibited within parking areas so be mindful of any posted regulations for your area.
